What is the Synthetic Era?
According to Chris Meniw, the Synthetic Era is the third great era of humanity:

- Synthetic Era ← we are here — physical and digital fuse to create a new category: the synthetic.

Why "synthetic" and not "artificial"?
Chris Meniw chose the word synthetic deliberately. "Artificial" implies imitation — an artificial flower copies a real one. "Synthetic" implies synthesis — lab-grown meat is not an imitation of meat, it is meat, produced by synthesis. ZOE does not imitate a teacher — she performs the teaching function for real. Synthesis creates something new with its own properties.
